About Dr. Calzada

Place of Birth

Panama City, Panama

Current Residence

Memphis, Tennessee

Dr. Jorge Calzada lives in Memphis, Tennessee with his two children, George and Adela. He is often asked how a doctor born in Panama City, in Central America, ends up in the middle of the United States to which he answers, "I came for training and stayed here". He ultimately moved to the United States for his training in Ophthalmology and began work at St. Jude Children's Hospital.

Dr. Calzada still travels to Panama regularly to his clinic there, Panamerican Vitreoretinal Consulting, where he has an expertise in retinal microsurgery, as well as the opportunities to explore medical research and collaborate with scientists. Having had the experience of being a professor at a retina fellowship training program provided him with the opportunity to help mentor young physicians just as his mentors helped him.

Beyond the medical and scientific, he has two other deep loves: music and martial arts. He has been practicing both since he was 7 years old. He currently holds a second-degree black belt in traditional Japanese shotokan karate-do and still practices every day. And being in a city with musical roots like Memphis has allowed him to study jazz piano and the blues Hammond organ. He currently plays with a jazz trio and a large band with other music-loving physicians called Memphis Soul Remedy.
