Most people think about UV protection for their skin. Far fewer think about their eyes — even though UV radiation is one of the most consistent, preventable contributors to serious eye disease. Summer amplifies the risk dramatically. Here's what you need to know.

What Is UV Radiation — and Why Do Eyes Care?

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a form of electromagnetic energy emitted by the sun. It occupies the spectrum just below visible light, in wavelengths from roughly 100–400 nanometers. For practical purposes, there are two types that reach Earth's surface:

UVA (315–400nm)

Penetrates more deeply into the eye, reaching the lens and potentially the retina. Responsible for long-term, cumulative damage. Present at relatively constant levels throughout daylight hours and year-round.

UVB (280–315nm)

Higher energy but mostly absorbed by the cornea and lens. Responsible for acute damage like photokeratitis ("eye sunburn"). Intensity varies with time of day, season, and altitude.

Photokeratitis

Essentially a sunburn of the cornea. Causes intense pain, redness, and temporary vision loss. Often occurs after snow or water reflection exposure — even on overcast days.

Cataracts

Cumulative UV exposure accelerates the breakdown of lens proteins, clouding your natural lens years earlier than would otherwise occur. UV protection is one of the most evidence-backed ways to delay cataract onset.

Pterygium

A fleshy, wedge-shaped growth of conjunctival tissue that can slowly creep across the cornea. More common in people who spend significant time outdoors without eye protection.

Macular Degeneration

UV and high-energy visible (blue) light are believed to contribute to cumulative retinal damage over time, increasing risk for age-related macular degeneration — the leading cause of vision loss in adults over 50.

Eyelid Skin Cancer

The thin skin of the eyelid is one of the most common sites for basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma. Yet it's one of the most overlooked areas when applying sunscreen.

Pinguecula

A yellowish, raised deposit on the white of the eye, caused by UV exposure and dry conditions. Though usually benign, it can cause irritation and may progress to a pterygium.

When Is UV Exposure Highest?

UV intensity is far from constant. Several situational factors dramatically increase the amount of UV reaching your eyes — many of which are specific to summer activities.

On the water

Water reflects up to 100% of UV rays directly back at you. Boating, fishing, and water sports carry among the highest UV exposure risks.

At the beach or pool

Sand reflects up to 25% of UV rays. Combined with direct overhead sun, exposure at the beach is significantly higher than most people realize.

In the mountains / at altitude

UV intensity increases approximately 10–12% for every 1,000 meters of elevation. Mountain skiing and hiking carry serious UV eye risk, especially with snow reflection.

On overcast days

Up to 80% of UV rays penetrate cloud cover. Overcast skies create a false sense of safety that leads to unprotected exposure.

Near midday (10am–4pm)

UV index peaks during these hours. Even 30 minutes of unprotected exposure during peak hours can begin to affect eye tissue.

How to Choose Sunglasses That Actually Protect

Sunglasses are your primary defense — but not all lenses are created equal. Here's what to look for, and what to look past.

Look for 100% UV400 Protection

The label matters. Lenses must block 100% of UVA and UVB rays (up to 400nm wavelength). "UV400" and "100% UV protection" mean the same thing. Dark lenses without UV protection are actually worse than no sunglasses — pupils dilate behind dark glass, letting in more UV.

Choose Wraparound or Large Frames

UV enters from the sides, top, and bottom — not just through the lens. Wraparound-style frames or larger lenses significantly reduce peripheral UV exposure reaching the eye.

Polarization ≠ UV Protection

A common misconception. Polarized lenses reduce glare from reflective surfaces — an important comfort benefit — but polarization does not block UV rays. Always verify UV400 certification separately.

Price Doesn't Guarantee Protection

An inexpensive pair of sunglasses with proper UV400 certification protects just as well as a luxury pair optically. That said, fit, durability, and lens quality all affect long-term comfort and clarity.

Don't Forget Kids

Children's eyes transmit significantly more UV to the retina than adult eyes — the lens becomes less UV-permeable with age. Starting UV protection early matters enormously for long-term eye health.

What About Contact Lens Wearers?

Some contact lenses incorporate UV-blocking properties — and while this provides a degree of additional protection for the cornea and lens, it does not replace sunglasses. Contact lenses don't cover the full ocular surface, and they offer no protection to the conjunctiva, eyelid skin, or surrounding tissue.

Contact lens wearers should still wear UV-certified sunglasses outdoors. Think of UV-blocking contacts as a supplement, not a substitute.

Don't Forget a Wide-Brimmed Hat

A hat with a 3-inch or wider brim blocks roughly 50% of UV radiation from reaching the eyes. Combined with proper sunglasses, it significantly reduces the UV entering from above and at angles — especially helpful on water or sand where reflection is a major factor.

Children Need More Protection, Not Less

The crystalline lens in a child's eye is significantly more UV-transparent than an adult's. Research estimates that children receive approximately three times the annual UV dose to the retina compared to adults, partly because children spend more time outdoors, and partly because their lens absorbs less UV before it reaches the retina.
