Why Diabetic Eye Exams Matter
Diabetes affects the blood vessels throughout your body—including the delicate blood vessels in your eyes. Over time, elevated blood sugar levels can cause these vessels to weaken, leak, or grow abnormally, leading to a group of conditions collectively known as diabetic eye disease.
The most alarming aspect of diabetic eye disease is that it often progresses without any noticeable symptoms until it reaches an advanced stage. By the time a patient notices changes in their vision, irreversible damage may have already occurred. The most common diabetic eye disease. High blood sugar damages the blood vessels in the retina, causing them to leak or grow abnormally. It is the leading cause of vision loss among working-age adults.
Diabetic Macular Edema (DME)
A complication of diabetic retinopathy where fluid leaks into the macula—the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision—causing swelling and blurred vision.
Glaucoma
People with diabetes are twice as likely to develop glaucoma, a condition where increased pressure in the eye damages the optic nerve. Early detection is critical to preventing vision loss.
Cataracts
Diabetics develop cataracts at a younger age and at a higher rate than the general population. High glucose levels cause the lens of the eye to swell and cloud, reducing vision clarity.
Warning Signs to Watch For
While many diabetic eye conditions develop without symptoms, certain warning signs should prompt you to schedule an exam immediately—do not wait for your annual visit.

What to Expect at Your Diabetic Eye Exam
A diabetic eye exam is more thorough than a routine exam and uses advanced imaging to fully assess your retinal health.
Visual Acuity Test
We measure how well you see at various distances using a standardized eye chart to establish a baseline and detect changes over time.
Dilated Eye Exam
Dilation drops are used to widen your pupils, allowing our doctors to examine the retina and optic nerve for signs of damage from diabetes.
Tonometry
We measure the pressure inside your eyes to screen for glaucoma, which occurs at higher rates in diabetic patients.
Retinal Imaging
Advanced digital imaging captures detailed photographs of the retina, providing a permanent record for tracking disease progression over time.
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
A non-invasive scan that creates cross-sectional images of the retina to detect macular edema, retinal thinning, and other structural changes.
Doctor Consultation
Your ophthalmologist reviews all findings, discusses any concerns, and creates or updates your personalized management and treatment plan.
Plan Ahead: Dilation Required
Your eyes will be dilated during this exam. Please arrange a ride home, as dilation can blur close-up vision for several hours after your appointment.
